Caricatures From Photos
As much as I like to sketch from life, it's impossible for me to have customers come to my studio for sittings. I am neither set up for it nor is it a very convenient thing for most customers to do. I get most of my work over the Internet, from people all over the globe, so I can hardly expect the Australian real estate agent in need of a business card to sit in my studio in Massachusetts. Caricature drawing from photos is the only sensible proceedure. I can draw them with care and detail, without placing any responsibilities on my customers, save for emailing me the photos and, of course, paying my bill.
Party Caricaturist
Some people ask me to do live caricature drawing for parties. The idea has its attraction, but my style is not one that lends itself either to speed or to a live party setting. My caricatures are done on computer - digital caricatures, to be exact- and I take several hours of careful drawing and coloring to achieve good likenesses. With several photos as references, I can usually get a likeness equal to that achieved at a live sitting.
How To Order A Caricature
If you are interested in ordering a caricature from me, the first thing to do is get a quote for the job. The next step is paying a down payment, assuming you agreed to the quote. The third step is to select photos of the subject that are clear, fairly large and, preferably, in color. It's always a good idea to tell me in writing the subject's eye and hair color, as often these features do not come out accurately in photos (the main culprit is pink eye). Photos showing the subject in a variety of poses is also helpful.
When I receive the photos, I begin the caricature. Usually within a day or two the customer will receive the first of several work-in-progress samples. These first samples are meant to establish the line art. Once the customer approves the line art, I proceed to the coloring stage. Samples of the coloring are sent to the customer for evaluation. When approved, the caricature is finished off and a high resolution file is prepared.
